“I miss you,” Ryan said.

“I miss you, too,” I replied seductively, my thoughts recalling a very sexy scene.

I hadn’t told Ryan about Pam and Elijah.

Talking about it made it worse. Which was why I had only told Gianna the basics of what happened and avoided the deep dive that would consist of facts and feelings.

“You could sneak up here and see me,” Ryan said. “Elijah isn’t in the office.”

“Wait,” I said, facing away from the kids. “He’s not at work?”

“No, I haven’t seen him today.”

That was odd. When he left this morning. I knew he was angry, but I still thought he would go to work. He loved work more than me and his kids combined.

Pulling a paper towel off the roll, I dried my hands and watched Ariel and Gianna’s twins spill pink paint all over my kitchen table.

Gianna was trying to keep them in line, but she was outnumbered and Ariel, the ringleader of “let’s paint with our hands,” was not for the weak.

My phone beeped for the tenth time, indicating a call on the other line. I didn’t have to check to know that it was Pam calling.

It had been Pam calling all last night, throughout the entire morning, and apparently it would still be Pam calling for the rest of this evening.

Ignoring the unwelcome distraction, I opened the cabinet to collect plates and cups for the food that would arrive soon.

“Do you want me to come over and hang out with you?” Ryan asked.

“Not now,” I said, declining the tempting offer to be comforted. “Gianna and her kids are over, so it wouldn’t be a good idea.”

“Alright Babe, only if you’re sure because I could hide in the bushes until they leave.”

I paused again from pulling plates down from the cabinet and smiled. He was fantastic at making me feel special and loved. Elijah should take lessons from him.

“No, I just ordered a pizza, but maybe…” I added in a whisper, checking over my shoulder to be sure that no one was within earshot before continuing. “You can come over later tonight, around eleven. Gianna should be gone, and the kids will be asleep.”

“You know I’ll be there.”

“Great. I’ll leave the back door open.”

I expected Ryan to make a joke at my sexual innuendo, but Ariel came running over to me.

“Mommy! Mommy!”

Her hands were outstretched and covered in paint.

“Gotta go, the boss needs me. Love you.”

“Love you too,” he said.

I disconnected my bluetooth and lifted Ariel into the air, just in time to prevent my clothes from being dyed by her little hands.

“Yes, sweetie,” I said, spinning her around a few times before carrying her over to the kitchen sink. I turned on the water and grabbed the dishwashing liquid.

“Aww mom, I’m not ready to stop painting,” she whined.

“I know, but the pizza is almost here and you don’t want pink pizza, do you?”

Her eyes widened with the possibility.

I sometimes forgot how enticing insane things sounded to a toddler.

The paint rinsed off her hands easily and flowed down the drain, just like every time.
